Is Magnet compatible with wireless access???

Post by Rey » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:19 am

Just wondering if anyone knows how to use the Magnet broadband with a laptop through a wireless modem. I have a wireless Modem from before when I had UTV broadband, but the input is not ethernet. Does the Magnet modem have a wireless function or do I have to get some kind of converter to ethernet? Does this effect the speed of the broadband.

Magnet wireless

Post by gqma0 » Wed Mar 07, 2007 11:17 am

Hi Rey,

If you have Magnet, you get a Magnet modem which connects to the Fiber. It's not wireless. You need a wireless router such as the linksys WRT54G which you can connect anywhere in the house.

This one is an 802.11g which allows speed up to 54Mb/s. As the max D/L speed with Magnet is 8Mb/s, this doesn't affect the connection

I got the WRT54Gp2 which has 2 VOiP for connecting to Blueface and I'm quite happy with the coverage

The wireless routers are not expensive these days

Cheers

Gaetan,

Thanks for that. I'll go shopping this evening and try and pick one up. Its very handy to use the laptop whereever you want and not to worry about wires.

WRT54G

http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=306148

It's €67 + shipping from Komplett.

Unless you're in a hurry, you can save money

Otherwise, PC world will have some for ~€100

Cheers

Wireless encryption

Hi Rey,

Make sure you've switched on encryption to secure your connection. You can't imagine how many ppl don't have it on.

Cheers

It shouldn't be a problem

My Nintendo Wii connects to the internet through Magnet via wireless
